Facebook killer receives life sentence

facebook_pic A man who killed his wife over a posting made on Facebook has been jailed for life.

Wayne Forrester told police he felt "devastated" and "humiliated" when his wife changed her status to single a few days after she had kicked him out of their marital home.

Appearing before the Old Bailey, barristers explained how Forrester was drunk, and had been taking cocaine before driving back to their home in south London and attacking his wife, stabbing her to death with a kitchen knife. He believed his wife had been having an affair.

Forrester pleaded guilty to the crime, and will now serve a minimum of 14 years.

In a prepared statement, Forrester told the court: "Emma and I had just split up. She forced me out of the house and then posted messages on an internet website telling everyone she had left me and was looking to meet other men.

"I felt that I was watching somebody else attacking Emma. It was as though I had no control of what I was doing."

Has Microsoft got its eye on BlackBerry?

it_portal_pic_107046 Microsoft could be preparing a bid for BlackBerry maker, Research In Motion, according to analysts.

RIM's shares have practically fallen off a cliff in recent months, plunging from a 52-week high of $150 to today's price of around $68.

With the credit crunch likely to slow corporate IT spending, RIM could become even more vulnerable if the financial crisis doesn't dissipate quickly.

That leaves the company vulnerable to a takeover from a cash-rich suitor such as Microsoft, according to analysts. "RIM is a massive strategic fit [for Microsoft]," claims Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek, in an interview with Reuters. "I'm fairly certain they have a standing offer to buy them at $50 [a share]."

Microsoft has around $23 billion of cash on its balance sheet, with RIM currently valued at around $34 billion. Such a move will position MS aggressively in the mobile space competing directly against Nokia, Sonu-Ericsson and Apple.

Woman brain found guilty!?

bIn June a judge in India found a woman guilty of murdering her former fiancé and sentenced her to life in prison. The smoking gun? Test results obtained using the Brain Electrical Oscillations Signature test (BEOS) developed by Indian neuroscientist Champadi Raman Mukundan. The BEOS software uses an EEG to determine whether the subject is recalling specific details of a crime as they are being read aloud. BEOS "works" because as the crime's details are recited to a subject, their brain lights up in specific regions -- the areas that (in theory) show measurable changes when experiences are relived. According to Mukundan, the system can distinguish between peoples' memories of events they witnessed and deeds they committed. Gee, now that we have the technology to read criminal's minds and predict crimes we'll be expecting a crime-free society any minute now. I am not sure if this will work on all species, is this really admissible in a court of law? Link

Space Hotel sees 2012 opening

To infinity & beyond!!! Believe it or not, booking a hotel in space may become a reality sooner rather than later, and if things go as planned, the Galactic Suite will actually be welcoming in guests sans gravity in just five short years. Folks who make the trip will be able to "see the sun rise 15 times a day and use Velcro suits to crawl around their rooms by sticking themselves to the walls," and while spas with floating water sure sounds like something we'd be interested in, the nightly fees are quite literally out of this world. How much? Try $4 million for a three-day stay -- thats including shuttling back and forth, better bring your camera, eh?

Xbox 360 Elite and 300 HD DVD Contest

We've given away any number of Xbox 360s on Engadget in the past, but never one with the level of awesome turned up to 11 (or, in this case, 300). Today we're giving away one of just 20 super rare Xbox 360 Elite consoles printed with blood designs from 300 -- but rarer still since it's friggin' signed by Frank Miller. The details of what the winner takes:
300-Edition Xbox 360 Elite (120GB drive, wireless controller, etc.)
Console is signed by 300 creator and comic legend Frank Miller, as well as Zack Snyder, director of the eponymous film
300 combo DVD / HD DVD (which is, incidentally, out today) to go right along with it. Look, we'll admit it, we really don't want to give this thing away -- so make sure you follow the contest guidelines, ok?The rules (yeah, there are always rules):
Leave a comment below -- tell us your fave scene from the movie. (It's ok if you haven't seen it, but where the hell have you been?)
You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.) In other words, be careful when commenting and if you submit more than once, only activate one comment, ok?
If you enter more than once, only activate one comment -- otherwise we'll send Leonidas after you.
Contest is open to anyone worldwide!
Entries can be submitted until 11:59pm EDT on Sunday, August 12th.

Bill Gates Visiting the Space?

There are rumors saying that Mr. Bill Gates is taking a holiday out of the earth, in space. A Russian cosmonaut said that Gate’s colleague and the current space tourist Charles Simonyi, has cited the world’s richest man is considering a possible flight to the space. U.S company, Space Adventures, charges $25 million dollar for this out of world trip. However Mr.Gates has not confirmed his cosmos desires personally.
I just hope that the shuttle does not run on windows.

N800 Knock Off!!

At this point the knockoff wizards in China will copy pretty much anything, so we're not going to claim to be surprised at this blatant rip of Nokia's N800 "Internet Tablet." The GPS unit runs Windows CE 5.0 and features a 4.3-inch touchscreen with handwriting recognition, WiFi, Skype, email and MSN support, document viewers, and a media player. In my book this would be a cool knock off, as I am not a huge fan of Symbian OS.

Microsoft Surface (popular mechanics)

Microsoft Surface Teaser

Surface computing has four key attributes:
- Direct interaction. Users can actually "grab" digital information with their hands and interact with content by touch and gesture, without the use of a mouse or keyboard.
- Multi-touch contact. Surface computing recognizes many points of contact simultaneously, not just from one finger, as with a typical touch screen, but up to dozens and dozens of items at once.
- Multi-user experience. The horizontal form factor makes it easy for several people to gather around surface computers together, providing a collaborative, face-to-face computing experience.
- Object recognition. Users can place physical objects on the surface to trigger different types of digital responses, including the transfer of digital content.

Sun shows iPhone-like Java Mobile FX platform

Sun is again trumpeting Java from the top of its lungs -- and we're not talking about speweing coffee here here -- showing off what appeared to be flashy new cellphone software at the JavaOne conference this week. Not big news there, except that the Sun software apparently looked eerily like the Apple iPhone's software; in fact, the platform Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz showed off is already being dubbed "jPhone" based on the striking resemblance to Apple's goods. The actual product name is Java Mobile FX and it's based on code from SavaJe, a Java-centric mobile OS company Sun just completed acquiring last week. The OS platform war has started, Symbian and MS are leading the pack, will Apple take first spot or will Sun manage to turn things to their advantage, one thing for sure I sure do hope that they have useful functionalities.
